Evaluation Checklist:
Selection Policy
- Does my selection policy account for the purchase of graphic novels, challenges to graphic novels, and deselection of graphic novels?
User Group
- What age is the intended audience of this graphic novel collection? Are the materials too mature/immature?
Popular Demand
- Is it too costly of a commitment to invest in an entire series?
- Will demand for the series create circulation and material maintenance problems?
- Is there room in the budget for this expensive format?
Current Collection
- Does the title fit into the current collection? Does it relate to the other graphic novel genres? Does it target a new audience?
- Does the title rely on the purchase of other materials such as sequels, prequels, etc? Does it pick up where the previous volume left off or is some helpful backstory included?
Creators
- What is the reputation of the creator and which audience would it attract?
Awards
- Has it received any awards, such as the Harvey, Eisner, or YALSA?
Physical Attributes
- Will the print quality and paper quality allow for multiple usages? If not, will it be difficult to repair?
Literary Quality
- Are both the text and art of equal quality?
- Is there a relationship of synergy between the images and text? Are the two elements mutually dependent?
- Does the dramatic positioning of the graphics match the drama of the storyline?
- Are the colors and fonts appropriate or distracting?
- How does the panel layout affect reading?
Reviews
- How does this particular review source approach age appropriateness?
- Is this review written by a fan or a professional review source?
